Media Release – Jervois Park Update
Darwin Film Society (DFS) welcomes the NT Government’s announcement today that Jervois Park will no longer be available as a site to build a luxury hotel.
DFS supports the recent decision by Cabinet to keep Jervois Park out of bounds for a luxury hotel, instead confining negotiations with successful luxury hotel applicant Landbridge Infrastructure Group to the recently released Toga land on the opposite side of Kitchener Drive. DFS can envision exciting opportunities for synergy between Deckchair Cinema and the owners of the new luxury hotel now to be built at Waterfront.
DFS have never been opposed to a luxury hotel development in Darwin, only a luxury hotel on the Jervois Park site. We have remained consistently opposed to a possible hotel on Jervois Park, citing concerns that the hotel would threaten the viability of Deckchair Cinema. These concerns may be revisited on DFS’s official Position Statement and last week’s Media Release.
In March 2016 we created a petition to amplify persistent concern from our members and community supporters about the possibility of a hotel next door. The petition attracted well over 1000 signatures without heavy campaigning, as well as countless comments indicating the community valued the park itself as one of the only public green spaces next to the water and a popular place for many recreational activities such as picnicking, dog-walking, fishing and exercising.
We feel that concern from the community has been heard and common sense has prevailed with the decision to keep Jervois Park as a public green space, however we will continue to protect Deckchair and Jervois Park while the luxury hotel transitions from proposal to reality.
DFS had organised a Public Meeting to discuss the possibility of the hotel replacing a large part of Jervois Park. We will take the opportunity to host a BBQ for DFS Members instead and welcome all those who support the decision to save Jervois Park to come along.
